History Of Wrexhamian Chapter

Forming the Chapter

Fortunately, the Chapter Scribes E have preserved the pre- consecration correspondence. It is, however, rather limited in scope and consists mainly of formal correspondence with the then Provincial Scribe E, John E. Evans, PAGDC. Clearly there was a need for a new Royal Arch Chapter in Wrexham: in the Founders’ submission to the Provincial Scribe E made in February 1973, the point was made that no chapter had been formed in Wrexham since October 1936, when the Bromfield Chapter was formed and at that time Wrexham had only two craft lodges. During that period the number of Wrexham craft lodges had increased to six, not counting Cambrensis Lodge (Warrant surrendered), and the Founders were confident that there were sufficient candidates to keep three chapters at work.

The Founders had canvassed the two Wrexham chapters: Sir Watkin Chapter No.1336 and Bromfield Chapter No. 4233, and obtained their blessings for a new chapter. Moreover, they had agreed to contribute a fair share of the furniture and other regalia costs already incurred by Sir Watkin Chapter and Bromfield Chapter and would pay their share in future if the proposed chapter were successful in
its formation petition.

The Provincial Grand Chapter insisted that the proposed chapter should meet the following criteria:

  1. That it was looked upon with favour by the existing chapters.
  2. There was a reasonable prospect of candidates to keep the chapter in a healthy condition.
  3. The required financial information (e.g. fees and subscriptions etc) was satisfactory.
  4. That no Founder MEZ, other than the founding MEZ, should pass through the Chairs.
  5. That suitable premises were available for meetings.
  6. That all petitioning members should expect to assist in the conduct of the new chapter – (i.e. take office).

The Founders were able to satisfy Province that they could meet these criteria and in due course their petition was accepted and arrangements made for the Consecration Ceremony. In parallel with those, the Founders attended to the preparation and approval of all the necessary formalities without which the Consecration and the Chapter would be incomplete, including, for example, the By-laws and the arrangements for the Consecration Ceremony itself.

The Chapter was founded at a time when there was considerable interest in Freemasonry in Wrexham. Over the decades following the end of WWII in 1945, a number of new Wrexham craft lodges were founded: Offa No. 6660 in 1948, Wrexhamian No. 6715 in 1948, Berwyn No. 7361 in 1964, St. Catherine No. 8577 in 1974, Maesgywn Lodge of Installed Masters No. 8772 in 1977 and Erddig No. 8933 in 1980. None have been formed in Wrexham itself since. Many of the men who joined were former servicemen or employees of large employers such as Manweb, the Fire service and North Wales Police and enjoyed the fraternal companionship and charitable service provided by lodge membership that, hitherto, they had enjoyed in service or employment. The way was clear for the formation of a new Royal Arch Chapter which these men were able to join and progress more speedily through the Chairs, and so it proved.

The founding members were keen to ensure that the Chapter was well managed and maintained a high standard of ritual. This was borne out by the, often glowing, reports of Representatives of the Provincial Grand Superintendent over the years and that, coupled with the friendly companionship of the Chapter, undoubtedly contributed to its rapid expansion and popularity following its consecration.
